NCC FALL TOURNAMENT 2016

On September 17-18 the American rules and golf croquet tournament took place at the National Croquet Center in West Palm Beach, Florida. There were 24 players in both events with 14 players in two blocks in the American rules game and 10 players in the golf croquet. Both events were singles play only. The list of players was consistent again with most of the players from in and around Palm Beach County, while the Crouch and Dos Santos families came down from Palm Coast 3 hours away. In the championship flight there were two blocks of seven players and in the golf croquet there were ten players.

At the end of block play Mike Todorovich and Rick Landry both finished 6-0 and each one there blocks respectively. The championship flight winner was Rick Landry over Mike Todorovich 26-8. The first flight playoffs would have been Chad Goodwin versus Steve Grassbaugh and Linda Dos Santos versus Bob Crouch. Unfortunately, matches finished late and four of the eight players had to leave town so a Tuesday match was not possible. In the golf croquet singles championship there were nine rounds played. It was great watching the styles of play and how the players strategized with no one to rely on but themselves. First place went to Steve Mednick, second place went to Mike Sexton who came from fifth place after day one well done Mike. Third place went to Caryl Firth.

Again, thanks to all the participants for putting up with the long days, and the oppressive heat. Special thanks to TD Rick Landry and TM Bill Trower and all the other members who helped make this event a success. This will be the last event of the summer series of croquet for the season. Great job everyone!

NCC SUMMER TOURNAMENTS 2016

By Rick Landry

On August 20-21, the third tournament took place in the NCC summer croquet series the top four players with 24 participants who battled the extreme heat and long days. There were 12 players in the golf croquet and 12 players in the American rules matches. In the American rules there was a championship flight of 6 players and 6 players in the first flight. In the golf croquet it was played as an open event.

At the end of block play on Sunday morning the top four players from each flight played in the knockout round. In the first semi-final in the championship flight Mike Todorovich beat Ray Liberti 26-17. In the second semi-final Steve Grassbaugh beat Bob Crouch 17-13. In the final Mike Todorovich beat Steve Grassbaugh 26-3. In the first flight semi-finals Gerry Eubank beat Clint Fowlkes 15-9 and Gerald Shugar beat Jeff Morrison 19-9. In the final Gerald Shugar beat Gerry Eubank 10-5. In the golf croquet there were 6 rounds played and everyone appeared to be having a great time with a lot of laughs. First place went to Rick Landry, second place went to Steve Mednick and third place went to Jim Grady.

Again, I would like to thank all the participants and spectators for putting up with the long days of over 90 degrees and hotter. Special thanks to Rick Landry, Bill Trower and Lynda Sudderberg for their help each day in setting up courts and making sure everyone had enough to eat and drink.

The next event will take place on September 17-18. If you are interested in playing in the next event please sign up at The National Croquet Center or call Marie Sweetser at 561-478-2300.

NCC SUMMER TOURNAMENTS 2016

On July 16-17 a solid field of 32 players graced the lawns at the National Croquet Center in West palm Beach, Florida. There were 20 players participating in the American rules and 12 players in Golf Croquet. The weather reaching the mid-nineties each day tested everyone patience and concentration. Again, many players were from the greater West Palm Beach area, but the Dos Santos and Crouch families drove three hours from Palm City to play in their second event this summer. There were 12 championship players in two blocks of six players. There were eight players in the first flight and twelve players in the golf croquet event.

At the end of block play on Sunday morning the top four players were separated into a Championship A and B flight. In the first flight all eight players played in the knockout round. In the first match in Championship A semi-finals, Mike Todorovich narrowly beat Rick Landry 12-11 and in the second match Derek Wassink beat Ian Harshman 21-6. In the final Derek Wassink bested Mike Todorovich 20-14. In the Championship B semi-finals, Lynda Sudderborg beat Dick Scherf 14-13 and Bob Crouch beat Steve Grassbaugh 17-14. In the final Bob Crouch beat Lynda Sudderborg 18-12. In the Golf Croquet there were nine rounds played and most of the matches were very close usually within 1 or 2 wickets. First place went to Danielle Englander, Second Place Rosemary Faulconer and third place went to Hal Denton.

Again, many thanks to all participants and spectators for putting up with the extreme heat and long days playing the great sport we all love. Special thanks to Rick Landry and Bill Trower for making sure the courts were set up each day for play and refreshments were readily available.

The next event will take place on August 20-21. If you are interested in playing in the next event, please sign up at The National Croquet Center or call Marie Sweetser at 561-478-2300.

CHAMPIONSHIP FLIGHT

1.     Michael Todorovich 2. Bob Crouch 3. Richard Scherf 3. Ray Liberti 5. William Trower 5. Rick Landry 5. Stephen Grassbaugh 5. Linda Dos Santos 9. Clint Fowlkes 10. Nancy Crouch 11. Rosemarie Maccario 11. Chad Goodwin.

On June 11-12 a solid field of 12 players consisting of two championship blocks of 6 players competed over two days of unpredictable weather for the NCC series of 6 wicket and golf croquet events. Most players were local with some traveling over 3hrs to play the event. There were four players in the golf croquet event. Handicaps for this event were anywhere from -1 to 12 and there were some upsets in block play.

At the end of block play on Sunday morning the top four players from each block played off in the knockout quarterfinals. In the first round Mike Todorovich advanced over Stephen Grassbaugh. Ray Liberti advanced over Rick Landry. Landry up by 8 wickets in last turn, Liberti hits a 50ft roquet and rattles off ten wickets for a two wicket win 18-16. It was the turn of the competition. Bob Crouch bested Linda Del Santos and Dick Scherf won out over Bill Trower.  In The semi-finals Mike Todorovich proved to be too much for Ray Liberti and won 26-3. In the other semi-final Bob Crouch beat Dick Scherf.

In the final once again Todorovich proved to be to strong and went on to beat Bob Crouch 26-3

In the Golf Croquet event there were three rounds played each day with spirited competition and a lot of laughs and great shots. The overall winner was Sue Varey and second place was Lois Clay. Third place Denise DelRusso and fourth Tom Graham.

Special thanks to Rick Landry putting together the draw sheets and making sure the courts were all ready to go for play each day. Also, Bill Trower for his work as well as arranging the food and drinks for all to enjoy.

If you are interested please call Bill Trower at 561-523-3535. TD: Rick Landry

NCC May Weekender (AC)

AC May Weekender 2016 by Ian Harshman

With 12 competitors split down the middle into 2 flights of 6 players, our May AC weekender turned out to be a great success and everyone had a blast. In first flight, there were 4 playing their very first AC tournament (Howard Sosin, David Spivey, Bill Trower and Noriko Shugar). Christophe Bergen swept the first flight and was the only player in the tournament to go completely undefeated. David Spivey and Bill Trower made good showings but it was Howard Sosin who battled his way into 2nd place. In the Championship flight it turned out to be a very even playing field. Johnny Mitchell was playing top notch the whole tournament, but in semi-finals it was Ian Harshman who knocked him out and went on to win the tournament in a final against Mike Todorovich. Ian went into the KO as 4th seed but with 2 important wins was able to pull out on top. Derek Wassink also made a great showing, but pulled out before the KO. Mike Gibbons was also playing well and it was great to see Dick Brackett at an AC tournament. Special thanks to Bill Trower for helping with everything and arranging the lunches. We all look forward to the next one!

-Ian Harshman, TD.

AC Worlds: Mulliner 3, Maloof 2

In a final that had everything, England's Stephen Mulliner repeated his Saturday performance and once again came back from an 0-2 deficit to American David Maloof to claim his first WCF World Association Croquet title. The scoreline went down as 22-26, 9-26, 26-21, 26-19, 26tp-0 for Mulliner in a epic that stretched out from the morning start to an under the lights finish at the National Croquet Center in West Palm Beach, Florida.

AC Worlds-Maloof versus Mulliner

WEST PALM BEACH, FLORIDA -- It was a stunning day of action at the 2016 WCF World Croquet Championship yesterday at the National Croquet Center in West Palm Beach, Florida. American David Maloof continued his drive to the final with a 3-1 win over David Maugham (ENG). Maugham got the first game with triple, but Maloof took over from there and once the momentum swung it seemed all go his way. He joins Ben Rothman as the only US player to reach the AC World Final.

THE USUAL SUSPECTS PLUS AN AMERICAN

WEST PALM BEACH, FLORIDA -- The 2016 WCF World Championship has now narrowed down from 80 players to the four best. Along the way, the event had some predictability as well as some new wrinkles. Primarily, David Maloof became just the fourth American to make the final four as was able to take down the 2013 AC World Runner-up Paddy Chapman 26-9, 7-26tp, 26-0, 26otp-12. Maloof joins Jerry Stark (1990), Jaques Fournier (2001) and Ben Rothman (2009) as the only Americans to make the final four in the 15 editions of the WCF World Championship.

In other action, American Danny Huneycutt did all he could to to make the grade as well as he pushed pushed Stephen Mulliner (ENG) to five games and even took a 2-1 lead in the best of five. Mulliner survived to advance with a 0-26tp, 26-16, 0-26tp, 26tp-0, 26tpo-15 scoreline.

David Maugham (ENG) pulled off an even bigger trick as he came back from a 2-0 deficit to Samir Patel to advance with a 3-2 win.

Reg Bamford sailed through again with a 3-0 win over Jenny Clarke (NZ). He had sextuples in games two and three. It looks like Mulliner will have a challenging task today.

National Croquet Center Association Rules Open Singles

Ten players competed over four days in the National Croquet Center’s Association Rules Open. This tournament, held over April 2 – 5, was a warm-up before the World’s Qualifier that started on April 11. Notable play included a relative newcomer to Association Rules, Ian Harshman, executing his first triple peel – undoubtedly the first of many as he masters the sport. The winner was Stephen Morgan, beating Ian 26 – 9 in the final. Stephen’s overall record was an impressive 7 wins, 2 losses with +90 net hoops.

February 19-23, 2014

THE 2014 CHUCK STEUBER OPEN CHAMPIONSHIPS

National Croquet Center, West Palm Beach, FL

February 19-23, 2014

There was something for everyone during this year’s Chuck Steuber Open Championships. Held over the span of five days, the first two were devoted to Golf Croquet, prize money awarded to the top finishers in the more advanced of the two Flights. The long weekend saw three Flights of USCA croquet and one Division of Association Rules, prize money offered (and taken) within the Association group. The weather was wonderful throughout and the courts were in fantastic shape.

Many of those players enjoying the weekend play found the Golf Croquet competition a great warm up. Twenty participants were split, and in both Flights block to ladder was the format, the top four in each reaching the Playoffs. Russ Dilley overcame Doug Coller in the First Flight while Brian Cumming cashed in a $750 check (American money) with his victory over Stephen Morgan ($500) in the Championship Division.

In USCA Rules play, matches were timed at one hour and thirty minutes for the first two Flights and fifteen minutes short of that for the non-double-banked Second Flight. In all cases, a Round Robin was followed by single-elimination ladders.

Russ Dilley, favored going into the event, earned his reputation with his decisive 15-9 victory over the easily excited Carla Rueck in the Second Flight. George Bagwell improved with each match and withstood the eternal flamboyance of Sandy Walsh; he captured the First Flight in a close 17-15 battle. In the Championship Flight, David McCoy played a heart attack-maker last turn to sneak by (18-17) Ted Quimby.

Association play, where the big money was, consisted of two blocks of six, the top two players in each block moving on to the Semi-Finals. Games were timed at two hours and thirty minutes with the Playoffs conducted in the best-of-three format. (Seven and a half hour time limit.) A Plate/Swiss was offered to those failing to reach the Playoff stage, and that stage proved to be harder to reach than expected. After block play, three players were tied for the final Playoff spot, and after the prevailing one-ball shoot-out, Brian Cumming was the last man standing amongst a group also including Stephen Morgan and Simon Jenkins.

In the Semis, Brian’s luck would not continue, for after winning the first game against Danny Huneycutt, Danny captured the next two to reach the Finals (-25, +21, +25tp). In the other half of the draw, Sherif Abdelwahab defeated Stuart Lawrence with +12 and +11 scores.

In the Third Place match, Brian would prevail (+26tp, +15) over Stuart and thus pick up another quick $500. Similarly, the Finals match would last but two games, and this time Danny offered fewer errant shots and with some steady play captured the Title with +15tp and +13 scores. Danny bank $2000 for his fine efforts and Sherif pocketed half that amount.

The Croquet Foundation of America would like to thank all of those in attendance and hopes that everyone enjoyed the Opening Reception, the morning Omelette Stations and the wonderful Sunday Brunch. More so, the Foundation expresses it appreciation for all of the continued support, hopes everyone enjoyed the variety of events offered and looks for another incredible event next year!

NCC Winter Open Singles Tournament

January 18-19, 2014          Winter Open Singles photo 2014.docx

Tournament Managers: John and Anthea Blamire Tournament Director: Bill Mead.

With three cold-fronts passing through South Florida that weekend all forty-nine players had one eye on the sky and one eye on the fast as glass grass as they marched out onto the dangerous lawns of the National Croquet Center.  It was the start of the popular weekend open singles tournament that, in the past few years, has attracted members and visitors alike to the sun and fun of the NCC - where croquet comes first!

During the next two days, each participant would play six games of singles in five blocks.   There would be no playoffs in this sanctioned tournament and winners would be determined by wins, net points and gross points.  This format ensures that each player can get out bed at a reasonable hour, play three games a day, only sit out once and be in the bar, or leaving for home, before the cruel wind and darkness descend for the evening.   It is proving to be very popular - too popular and next year there may have to be restrictions on the number of participants.

This year we had a strong Championship flight with two new players at this level, Pat Cort and David Collie, both of whom did well against proven champions such as Derrick Wassink and Bob Van Tassel and gave them both some bad moments - they will be players to watch in coming tournaments and games.  In First flight Bill Whitman was the one to watch, but he had to keep an eye on Bill Trower (9-wicket champion) and the vastly improved Dick Scherf (who tells us he was playing in the snow up-north before gathering his senses and returning to Florida).  They finished 1, 2, and 3 in this very competitive flight.

In Second Flight Ray Liberti showed the confidence he has gained recently from "playing up" in the NCC weekly low-handicap games, but Englishman Barry Sales did not take any prisoners in all his games and ended up only one-win shy of the top prize.  In Third Flight all bets were on Vicky Johnston after her recent wins in the NCC Championship Singles (she got the treasured "wooden spoon"), but she could not overcome the surprise winner Mark Ski, who credited his win to being from New York and from wearing all new clothes purchased in the USCA store!  Well done Mark and Vicky.

Fourth flight always produces drama and excitement.  As the scorekeepers paced the sidelines, long after all the other games had ended, the ultimate winner, Noriko Shugar wrapped up her fifth win(!) and once again proved that the hours of practice she puts in each week, is definitely paying off.  Behind her, Huston Huffman also had five wins, but fewer net points, so went home with a red ribbon instead of a blue one.

This tournament is always fun, enjoyable, fast, tense and well received by all who play.  It is  great way to revel in our sport.  The organizers would like to thank all the players for putting up with the cool wind and the bad jokes.  As usual at the NCC, the grass was a tribute to all the dedicated work of David, Carl and Bill, and the Sandy James food could not be left on the plate.

2013 Florida Regional Golf Croquet  Championship

                                                                      October 15, 2013

The National Croquet Club hosted the very first USCA sanctioned Florida Regional Golf Croquet Championship, October 11 thru 13, 2013.  Attendance was modest with a turnout of twelve competitors in two flights of singles and one flight of Championship doubles.  Tom Hankey won first flight over Karen Albert by winning two of three in the finals match.  Bill Mead was a double winner taking the Champion Singles over “Never Say Die” Dick Bracket and partnered with John Warlick to overcome the formidable Brackett-David Collie duo in a grueling three and a half hour Championship Doubles final under sunny skies with temperatures in the low 80s.

Friday’s Championship Doubles schedule was tight with five games in block and one best of three matches in the playoffs. Competitors in the top four positions advanced to the finals. The most common statement after the first day of play was, “My feet hurt”.  The Brackett-Collie team edged out Cheryl Bromley and Sergio DoRosario for first in block play by defeating the team from Hillsboro 7-6, an indication of the great play to follow. Team Albert, Michael and Karen, from Useppa Island and the glorious mountains of North Carolina, finished fourth in block play by defeating the new up and coming teams of Michael Sexton and Tom Hankey and the team of Doug Coller and Terry Howatt.  Playoffs saw Sexton and Hankey finish off Collar and Howatt to take fifth place while team Albert tied with Bromley and DoRosario for third place.

The Doubles best of three finals started early Sunday under the watchful eyes of Cheryl Bromley as Referee on Court (Cheryl was gracious to serve as Referee of Tournament). Bracket-Collie jumped out to a commanding 4-0 lead and coasted to a 7-3 victory in the first game of the match.  Game two saw Mead-Warlick take an early 4-2 lead only to be challenged late They evened the match with a 7-6 win.

The final game saw spectacular play time and again.  Dick Bracket, scrapping back on wicket six, brought the crowd to its feet by double clearing Mead-Warlick from their blockade and scoring the wicket with a precision 60 footer.  In the end Brackett was caught in a double bind with his ball jawsed in rover.  Mead had cleared Collie and advanced toward the tie breaking hoop so Brackett had Collie go to the east boundary just short of the penalty spot.  Warlick then played to a 15 degree angled jump position threatening a win if Brackett chose to remain in his wicketed position.  Bracket opted to score the tying hoop rather than risk the game, checkmate.  Mead took a three foot position on the tie breaker.  Collie narrowly missed the clear.  Warlick opted to set up. Brackett’s desperate 70 foot clearing shot knocked Mead off the wicket to the line. Mead then covered Collie’s shot on Warlick and the wicket.  Warlick scored the tie breaker for the Doubles Championship of the Florida Regional.

The singles finals proved anticlimactic as all players were physically spent after 16 hours of games the first two days.  Tom Hankey defeated Karen Albert 2-0 in a well contested First Flight Final.  John Warlick overcame Cheryl Bromley’s early lead.  Bromley shot a rare double wicket shot to open their game going up 2-0.  Great shot Cheryl!

John Warlick, the Tournament Manager, pulled off a wonderful event getting up before the sun each morning bringing in morning pastries and beverages, arranging for timely luncheons and facilitating après croquet libations on the lawns.  He managed a sparse budget and created a well appreciated tournament.  It was a great group of players which we all hope to see in upcoming events this season.  Cheryl Bromley ably served as Referee of Tournament adding her expertise.

A heartfelt thank-you to all,  Bill Mead, Tournament Director
